I think because:
The belt sander stops when I apply too much pressure.
120 grit is too fine to start with.
The compressor orbital sander stops rotating properly when I apply too much pressure.
So,
Need an angle grinder with flappy wheel,
50 grit for roughing at the start
Then move down to 120 with the orbital.
